Pre-manufactured roof and floor trusses are designed to work as complete structural systems. But what happens when a truss arrives damaged, doesn't match the conditions in the field, or ends up directly in the path of plumbing, electrical, or another building component?

Can you simply cut or modify the truss to make it work?

In many cases, a truss can be repaired or altered, but that doesn't mean it should be modified without a plan. Before cutting, drilling, or otherwise altering an engineered truss, the best first step is to contact the truss manufacturer and determine what modification or repair can be approved.

Why Would a Truss Need to Be Modified?

Even with careful planning, conditions on a jobsite don't always match the original plans perfectly.

A truss may have been damaged during transportation or installation. The dimensions used during design may not perfectly match existing field conditions. A floor truss could also end up interfering with a plumbing drop or another mechanical component.

Whatever the reason, the question eventually becomes the same:

What can we safely do to this truss?

Fortunately, there is often a solution. The important part is determining that solution before making the modification.

Why You Shouldn't Modify a Truss Without Approval

A truss isn't simply a collection of boards holding up a roof or floor. Its individual members work together to transfer loads through the structure.

Changing one portion of that system can affect other parts of the truss.

That's why a modification that looks minor in the field may have structural consequences that aren't immediately obvious.

We've seen situations where field repairs or alterations were made before contacting the truss manufacturer. The problem is that once the modification has already been made, the engineer has to design a repair around what has happened rather than determining the best solution beforehand.

That can turn what might have been a relatively straightforward modification into a much more complicated repair.

Contact the Truss Manufacturer First

If you discover that a truss needs to be altered, your first call should be to the truss manufacturer.

The manufacturer can review the situation and, when necessary, work with an engineer to determine an appropriate repair or modification.

That might mean reinforcing an existing member, adding another member to the truss, or using another engineered repair method.

There isn't one universal repair that works for every truss because every situation can be different.

The location of the modification, loads on the truss, truss configuration, lumber, connections, and reason for the alteration can all affect the appropriate solution.

What If Plumbing or Electrical Needs to Pass Through a Truss?

Mechanical conflicts are one reason someone may be tempted to modify a truss in the field.

For example, a floor truss may be installed directly where a plumbing drop needs to pass through the floor system.

It can be tempting to simply cut whatever is in the way.

Instead, contact the truss manufacturer before making the alteration.

An engineer can evaluate the affected area and determine whether the truss can be modified and what reinforcement will be required afterward.

The repair could involve adding another structural member to the face of the truss or, in some situations, another type of reinforcement. The appropriate repair depends on the individual truss and modification.

Can a Damaged Truss Be Repaired?

In many cases, yes.

Damage during transportation, handling, installation, or construction doesn't automatically mean the entire truss has to be replaced.

An engineered repair may allow the existing truss to remain in place while restoring the structural capacity required by its design.

Again, however, the repair should come from the appropriate manufacturer and engineering process rather than being improvised in the field.

What Happens If You've Already Cut the Truss?

If a truss has already been cut or modified, contact the truss manufacturer rather than attempting additional repairs yourself.

Provide as much information about the modification as possible. Photos, measurements, the location of the cut or damage, and information identifying the affected truss can help determine what needs to happen next.

An engineer may still be able to develop a repair.

The difference is that you're now repairing an existing modification rather than determining how to make that modification correctly in the first place.

That's why involving the manufacturer before cutting can save considerable time and frustration.

Plan the Modification Before You Make It

Don't assume that a truss can't be modified, but don't assume you can modify it however you want either.
